Obituary:
William Smith “Bill” Abernathy age 96, of El Dorado, AR passed away on Friday, May 4th 2018, at the Hudson Memorial Nursing Home surrounded by his family. Bill was born April 8th 1922, in Banks, AR a son of the late Gibb Willie Abernathy and Alpha Cunningham Abernathy. He was retired from Cooks Body Shop in El Dorado with 39 years of service, where he was the best front-end man at Cook’s Body shop for years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a United States Army Veteran serving in WWII and was the recipient of 4 bronze stars. Also preceding him in death was a former wife Anita Pennington Reaves Abernathy, a son Robert James (Bob) Reaves, grandson James Shannon (Shane) Reaves, a son in law Ray R. Slaughter, sisters Abbie Richardson and Bernice Abernathy. Bill is survived by his wife Peggy Smith Williams Abernathy, a daughter Lou Reaves Slaughter, Camden, AR. Step-daughter Margaret Beasley and spouse Hugh Allen, Sumpter, AR, Carolyn Cook and spouse Robert, El Dorado, AR, and Janet Taylor and spouse Kevin, Pine Bluff, AR. Grandchildren Todd Reaves Slaughter and spouse Jackie, Gainesville, GA, Tracy William Slaughter and spouse Lynn, Camden, AR, Melissa Slaughter Shaver and spouse Craig, McKinney, TX. Great-grandchildren Alex Reaves Slaughter, Camden, AR, Caroline Shaver Forson and spouse Ryan, Denton, TX, Mackenzie Shaver, Frisco, TX and Joseph Shaver, McKinney, TX. A nephew Tommy Richardson and spouse Cathey, Warren, AR, 2 nieces, Jennifer Reilly and spouse Micky, The Woodlands, TX, Robin Williams and spouse David, Hot Springs, AR. 6 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. A host of great-nieces and nephews and extended family. Funeral service was 2:00PM Monday, May 7, at Frazer’s Chapel with Rev. Ricky Smith and Rev. Hugh Nelson officiating. Linda Barrett was organist and soloist were Dottie Smith and Cathy Worley. Burial was in Reaves Family Cemetery in Bradley County Arkansas. Active pallbearers were Hugh Allen Beasley, Robert Cook, Kevin Taylor, Tracy Slaughter, Alex Slaughter, and Randy Reep. Memorials preferred The Bradley County Veterans Museum, 210 North Main Street, Warren, Ar. 71671.
